Eagle Scout Leadership Project #16
Max Carr from Troop 56, sponsored by the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, added a handicap ramp to the Chapel. This project had two parts: Raise the existing brick porch to be level with the entryway, and add a ramp to meet ADA requirements for accessibility. This is a good example of what happens when things don't go as planned. After the porch was raised and the first part of the ramp installed we decided to be sure there was enough room to make it to the sidewalk. The design called for an "L" shaped ramp with only one turn. The distance at the turn to the sidewalk in front using the ADA required slope put us 2 feet too long. After some thought and a call to the building inspector, we were able to change the "L" to a "U" and meet all of the requirements. A side benefit to this revised design was it allowed us to plant rose bushes in front of the ramp. This project was completed in 2009.
